ps is the perfect word to use when describing the three levels of self-awareness. The first is the level of awareness of what we are doing. We all know that we are doing something, whether consciously or subconsciously. We know what that something is so we can do it.
This is the level of awareness of how we feel about doing it. We don’t do it with conscious thought so we can say, “I do this”, and it doesn’t mean we are happy with it. We do it because we want to do it, and we feel we have to do it because we think it’s important. We are aware that our actions are important to us because we think they are.
Awareness of our actions is one of the three major ranking factors in Google. So if you want your website’s pages to rank high in search, you will almost certainly need links. Google (and other search engines) look at links from other sites as “votes.” These votes help them identify which page on a given topic (out of thousands of similar ones) deserves to be ranking at the very top of the search results.

A long time ago, there was a company called PageRank. They measured link popularity and created a ranking algorithm that rewarded websites that were linked to by other websites. PageRank was great for creating ranking signals, but it would also mean that your site would be penalized by Google (and other search engines) if it was linked to by a bad site. If you want your website to rank high in search, you will almost certainly need links.
This is why PageRank didn’t work as well as it did. The reason was that the algorithm didn’t take into account how important a link was. For example, if you want your website to rank high in search results, you need a link that will bring traffic to your website. If you have a bad link, it might bring traffic, but it might not.
This is one of those areas where Google and other search engines are getting better at taking into account. They now allow for websites to rank for keywords in a specific geographic region, for example. This is something we’ve discussed before, but with better analytics and more information about the content of the website, it can make a big difference in how your website is ranked.
Google and Yahoo! have implemented this as well, as we documented here. If you have a site in the US, you can rank pretty high for keywords in that region. If you’re in another region, you can rank higher based on the topics you cover. Google and Yahoo! also put a bit of value on the keyword phrase you use for your site, as well.
In the US, Google gives us a bit more information about the topic of our website. In the specific case of our own site, we have one section called “We’re not just selling guns and beer,” so we get the benefit of Google ranking that phrase higher in the search results for people searching for “firearms and beer.
However, in Europe, Yahoo gives our site a bit more visibility. Google and Yahoo show us the number of times our site is mentioned in the same search results. In the case of our own site, we are only mentioned 2 times in the results. This is because our site has one page on the front page for our own site and an article on our site.
