The Fort Dodge News is a weekly newspaper for the citizens of Fort Dodge, Iowa.

It came out of nowhere and went from a local rag to a statewide newspaper in a matter of months. What made this event even more remarkable is that it was something we as a community could never have dreamed of happening.

A Fort Dodge native, Rob Nelsen, had a vision to start a newspaper that was independent, local, and independent. He was passionate about the idea. The newspaper’s first issue came out in November of 2011. The paper grew quickly. The local population was excited about the idea. It was something we could do.

He got a couple of people to help him buy the property and build the building. We can’t speak to his financial success, but we can say there’s lots of free money to be made by a local independent press.
