Hearsay: That’s just one of the many ways that the Houston-area’s economy is the worst in the nation. What we’re doing in the city and the state is not working. We’ve got some major problems and if we can’t fix them, we can’t expect to grow our economy or improve the quality of life.

We just heard the numbers as Houston’s unemployment rate is 4.1 percent and the state’s is 9.9 percent. It really isn’t good. The city is one of the most expensive metro areas in America as well as one of the most expensive in the entire country. The city is actually the fourth most expensive in the nation for housing prices.

The city’s high rental costs are one of the main reasons why The Houston Chronicle reported earlier this year that the city’s median rental price was $2,895 per month, which is the highest it has been since 2008. The high rental costs are a direct result of the city’s soaring rents. So much of the housing is owned by wealthy people who own multiple homes or by large companies that occupy the city’s big, old office buildings.

Houston is a good example of the types of places that people in Houston who are well-off (or well-off in general) can afford to live in. I am sure this is why Houstonians are buying so many expensive homes in the city. It is also why the Houston Chronicle reported earlier this year that the city was adding more than 1,000 new housing units, to which the Chronicle reports a further 6,000 apartments are currently under construction.

This is good news if you’re a Houstonian because it means more affordable housing in the city. I don’t know about you, but I think Houston has enough problems that we need to just go ahead and build more of everything.

I don’t think that’s a bad thing at all. I think we need to focus more on what we have now, rather than what we don’t have. But Houston is still one of the most expensive places in the nation to live. We may not be seeing as much in the way of new construction as we would like, but I think we’re still ahead of the curve in terms of what is happening with housing in America.
