As much as we love the way the world works and believe in it, we don’t believe in the same things every day. We’re tired of telling ourselves that we can’t live with the same things we’re told.
We are so sick and tired of hearing how a woman who wants to become a doctor and a woman who wants to become an academic are the same. That we should just keep it to those who want it and leave the rest of us to be left to the men and women we were born to serve. We’re tired of being told that the only people who care about your education are the ones who are already doing it in your major. Why don’t you go study abroad.
Maybe because I’m already studying abroad. Or maybe I’m tired of being told that I had a good education. The truth is I graduated with a 4.0. I had a good education. It was a piece of paper that I could walk away from and go to work and get paid just as good. If I wanted, I could write my own degrees on a piece of paper.
The problem is that this idea that you need to leave the major you have in order to succeed, is also a major barrier to entering the job market. If you are a college graduate without a job, you can’t go to a company and ask for a job. This is an example of the old, “If you don’t have a job, go to school.” attitude that we’ve all been conditioned to believe.
I agree, but I think the biggest barrier to people starting out as an entrepreneur is that it is hard to leave the major you’ve been doing for so long. You have a family, a mortgage, children, and other stuff. Even if you leave all of that behind and move out of your parents’ basement, moving from apartment to apartment can be daunting. Even if you never leave your parents’ basement, you still have a mortgage.
