I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. I’m saying that if you want to have a home while you’re painting, if you want to make a living (or go out to the supermarket and buy some groceries) and are willing to pay for you to paint the walls of your house, you have to paint. I’m talking about just getting to the point where you’re going to want to paint. You don’t have to go the whole hog.
I just finished reading a new book about women artists. It talks about how many women artists, especially women of color, are having a tough time getting off to a good start. They don’t like the idea of painting their walls red or black. But I can understand why they don’t like that. I mean, the problem is the color. I went to a gallery with a friend of mine that was painting her house white and he asked me how I felt.
When you paint your house, the color becomes a part of you. It’s not just for the walls. You paint your house because that’s how you make your living.
